The Carer’s Mask — Lies, Scratch Cards and a £230k Deception

Carer Jailed for “Calculated Campaign of Deceit”

Sentencing of Biljana Zekavica: 4.5 Years for Fraud

A former carer has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison for defrauding vulnerable people out of thousands of pounds. Biljana Zekavica, 53, pleaded guilty to ten counts of fraud and false representation, having taken more than £230,000 from five victims.

⚖️ The Scheme: False Stories & Fabrications

Zekavica deceived her victims—clients and friends—by telling them she needed money for various fabricated reasons, including home renovations, medical procedures, and business projects. Guernsey Police described her actions as a “calculated campaign of deceit” that targeted vulnerable members of the community. The majority of the money was never repaid.

💔 Abuse of Trust: The Victims

The court heard how Zekavica’s actions devastated lives. Two of her victims have since died.

Case File: The Cleaner

One 89-year-old man who employed her as a cleaner was defrauded of almost £80,000.

Case File: The Missing Repayment

The wife of another victim, who loaned £35,000 for “house repairs,” asked for repayment to help fund her daughter’s return to the island to scatter her late husband’s ashes. This money never materialised.

Case File: Left with £60

A man in his 90s was left with less than £60 after lending Zekavica money repeatedly over three years. His statement read:

“To take advantage of an elderly man under the guise of care is a detestable act.”

🗣️ “People Have Lost Generational Wealth”

Chris Bale, a friend of Zekavica, waived his anonymity to speak out. He had loaned her £10,000 for cleaning equipment. He told ITV Channel that upon realizing the scale of the fraud, he felt his own loss “paled in comparison.”

“People have lost generational wealth, inheritance, things that would have put children through college… things that would have helped them.”

👮 Police Statement

Guernsey Police stated: “Her actions left victims not only out of pocket but also emotionally harmed after their trust was abused.”

Police have urged anyone else who may have been targeted to contact them.
